Police lay charges over sexual assault at Lake Illawarra

A man will appear in court today following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in the state's Lake Illawarra region earlier this month.

Just before 7pm on Tuesday 1 November 2022, emergency services were called to a shopping complex on Cove Boulevard, Shell Cove, following reports a woman had been sexually assaulted by man she had met earlier in the night.

A crime scene was established by officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District and forensically examined.

Detectives have since established Strike Force Onix to further investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Following extensive inquiries and a public appeal for information, a 49-year-old man attended Lake Illawarra Police Station about 6.30pm yesterday (Monday 28 November 2022).

He was arrested and charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent – serious indictable offence.

The Blackbutt man was granted conditional bail to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 11 January 2023.
