Police lay charges - Unlawfully cause serious harm - Yirrkala

Police in Nhulunbuy have charged a 38-year-old male after he allegedly used a fishing spear to stab a 27-year-old male.

The incident occurred around 10pm yesterday evening in Yirrkala when an argument between the two intoxicated males escalated, with the alleged offender arming himself with the spear.

It is believed the argument continued and the victim was stabbed once the chest, puncturing a lung. Paramedics and police were called to assist, with both agencies responding and quickly locating the victim before providing first aid.

The victim was then conveyed to Gove District Hospital before being medically evacuated to Darwin in a stable condition. He will undergo surgery for the punctured lung and possible damage to his heart.

The 38-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken in custody, charged with unlawfully causing serious harm. He was remanded to appear in the Darwin Local Court tomorrow.
