Police Legacy Honoured With New National Day

A new tradition has been established in honour of the ongoing care and support provided to policing families by Police Legacy, with June 17 now officially marking the first National Police Legacy Day since the support service's establishment 54 years ago.

Police Legacy is a vital not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the families of officers who have lost their lives or are suffering a terminal illness and provides an opportunity to give back to those who give so much to their community.

Queensland Police Legacy President Kent Ellis reflected on the importance of this new tradition and the enduring efforts of the organisation.

"The official launch of National Police Legacy Day. It is an opportunity not just to raise awareness, but to reaffirm our collective commitment to the families who stand behind the badge," he said.

"It is a moment to reflect on what began 54 years ago this month, when a small group of Queensland police officers decided that the informal tradition of "passing the hat around" to help grieving families wasn't enough.

"Something enduring was needed, something worthy of the people we serve and the sacrifices they make."

National Police Legacy Day honours this ongoing care and is symbolised by the Michaelmas Daisy; the flower of St Michael, patron saint of police.

In honour of this newly established day, Police Legacy Pins can be purchased at a cost of $5 from the Queensland Police Legacy office.
