Police officer assaulted at Wollongong

A police officer has been assaulted in Wollongong overnight.

About 9.45pm yesterday (Wednesday 4 March 2020) police were called to a home on Keira Street, Wollongong for a welfare check.

Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and spoke to the man through a window.

Following inquiries, the man was taken to Wollongong Hospital by ambulance for assessment.

At the hospital, the man allegedly became aggressive and charged at a male Senior Constable, throwing several punches.

A second police officer intervened, and as a result of the scuffle, all three fell to the ground.

During the fall the male Senior Constable – who was being held by the man - struck his head on a nearby chair.

The man was restrained before being sedated by hospital staff.

The male Senior Constable sustained lacerations to the back of his head and swelling under his left eye. He was treated at the scene and has since been released from hospital.

The 41-year-old man has since been charged with two counts of assault police and resist or hinder officer in the execution of duty.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court on 21 April 2020.
