Police are investigating after a fire broke out in a granny flat in Kogarah last night, NSW Police say.

Shortly before 11pm today, emergency services were called to a home on Green Street where they located a granny flat at the rear of the premises well alight.

A 62-year-old male occupant was located by Fire & Rescue NSW officers outside the flat attempting to put out the flames with a garden hose.

Fire officers took over and the occupant was treated by paramedics for burns to his upper body.

He was taken to St George Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
