Police pull residents from burning house in Granville

A police officer has been treated for smoke inhalation after pulling residents from a burning house in Granville overnight, NSW Police say.

About 8pm (Thursday 30 August 2018), officers from Cumberland Police Area Command were attending Blaxcell Street, Granville, for an un-related matter, when they observed a large amount of smoke coming from a nearby street.

As they started walking towards the home on Celia Street, the smoke grew bigger and officers called for backup emergency services.

When police arrived at the home, they observed residents re-entering the home – engulfed with smoke – to retrieve personal belongings.

The officers, a female sergeant and two male senior constables, entered the burning home and removed the occupants, a 71-year-old woman and two men, aged 41 and 48.

The occupants escaped uninjured.

The sergeant was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters and is believed to have started in the backyard.

The blaze is not being treated as suspicious.
