Police seek help to find suspected arsonist on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Emergency service personnel on Kangaroo Island were alerted to some abnormal fire activity which occurred in an area adjacent to a pine plantation near Bark Hut Road and Pioneer Bend Road in the early hours of this morning.

CFS had been proactively patrolling this area with some vegetation still smouldering. At about 4.45 a.m. on Wednesday 16 January emergency service personnel saw a new fire outbreak within an already burnt pine plantation along Pioneer Bend Road.

Of concern, is that they believed they saw a person adjacent to the fire - and that person could have been deliberately setting fire to some unburnt vegetation. This action did not result in any damage as it quickly self-extinguished.

There is no description of this person. A SAPOL member also saw a torchlight being operated in the same area as the person was seen.

A comprehensive search was undertaken in an effort to locate this person but to no avail.

At this time, police are continuing investigations into this matter. They ask that if any person has any information as to who this person might be – or who may see or hear anything suspicious to please call triple 000 if there is an immediate threat; 131444 for police attendance; or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
