Police seek owner of ashes

Melbourne North police are keen to return a box containing what is believed to be cremated human ashes back to its rightful owner, Victoria Police say.

The box was located by a crime scene officer in the boot of a stolen hire car that was located in Benjamin Street, Parkville in September 2017.

The car, which was reported stolen after it failed to be returned to Melbourne Airport the February before, is believed to have been used in numerous thefts and burglaries across the northern suburbs.

Crime Scene Officers sighted the car while recovering another stolen vehicle in Reservoir in April 2017.

Three men who were seen in the vehicle were later identified; all were arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods, and other offences in June and July 2017, however the car was not recovered until September.

Police have made a number of enquiries, including contacting victims of burglaries; however are yet to identify the box’s origin.

Investigators have released a number of images in the hope of reuniting the ashes with their rightful owner.

Anyone who may have any information is urged to contact the Melbourne North Police Station on 8379 0800.
