Police Seek Suspect in Hamilton Convenience Store Theft

Police are appealing for information to identify a man after a theft from a convenience store near Newcastle overnight.

Police were called to a convenience store on Beaumont Street, Hamilton, about 11.30pm last Thursday (22 January 2026), following reports a man, who was carrying a 9 litre gas bottle, took items before leaving the store.

A short time later, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District located a man matching the description in Beaumont Street, Hamilton. A struggle ensued when police attempted to arrest the man; it's alleged that two officers were assaulted, and the man ran from the scene. The officers were not injured.

As investigations continue, police have released a description of the man who might be able to assist with inquiries.

He is described as of Maori/Pacific Islander in appearance, aged 20 to 25, about 180cm tall, with a medium build, and at the time was wearing a blue t-shirt and blue shorts.
