Police seek witnesses to random assault in Golden Square

Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing to anyone who witnessed an assault in the Golden Square area on Sunday afternoon to contact Crime Stoppers.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Allingham and Laurel streets when a 50-year-old Melbourne man was assaulted by two men between 12.45 and 1.15pm.

The victim told police he was filming some native birds when he was involved in a verbal disagreement with an unknown woman.

Following the conversation with the woman the victim was approached by an unknown man, from behind, and was struck to the back of the head causing him to fall to the ground.

The victim got up and quickly walked away along Laurel Street in the direction of Panton Street.

A second unknown man appeared and both men caught up with the victim and continued to assault him before the victim managed to run into a nearby business.

The victim sustained a head injury requiring hospital treatment.

The first man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 30's, about 173cms tall, stocky build with short balding hair.

The second male is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, taller than the first man, aged in his late 20's to early 30's, of thin build, with dark shoulder length hair.
