Police update 1: Hit and run, Hyde Park

Forensic Crash Unit investigators have charged a man following an alleged hit and run incident at a Hyde Park shopping centre car park last year.

Around 8am on October 15, 2021, a now 90-year-old woman was walking in the underground car park of the shopping centre, at the Barryman Street entrance.

It will be alleged, a utility drove past her and then began to reverse and collided with the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head on the ground. She suffered life changing injuries.

The utility then left the carpark at speed.

The Garbutt woman was transported to the Townsville Hospital, where she spent many months in a serious but stable condition with head injuries.

Police charged a 66-year-old Belgian Gardens man on October 6 with one count each of driving without due care and attention causing grievous bodily harm and failing to comply with duties of a driver involved in a crash. He is due to appear In Townsville Magistrates Court on November 16.

In March of this year a $50,000 reward was issued in relation this incident, however as the arrest resulted directly from police investigations, the payment of the reward is not applicable.
