Police update: Death - East Arnhem

Northern Territory Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the death of a youth in Yirrkala yesterday.

The 16-year-old male had been stabbed during a large disturbance that involved up to 100 people. Three other men, aged 18, 40 and 45 also suffered stab wounds and were transported to Gove District Hospital before being transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital. Two patients are in a stable condition, the third is in a serious but stable condition.

Assistant Commissioner Michael White APM said, "Police are saddened by what has happened and will be working closely with the community to solve this problem.

"There have been no further incidents and we appreciate the calm response and support from the community at this sad time, as investigations proceed."

Additional police resources sent to Nhulunbuy include investigators, forensics and Aboriginal Community Police Officers. The Territory Response Group is on the ground to provide assistance to the general duties members if required.
