Police update: Suspicious fire, Ashmore

Police have charged a man over an alleged suspicious house fire at Ashmore and subsequent stolen boat fire at Clagiraba earlier this month.

Around 8.00am on January 14, police were called to Belah Street at Ashmore, following multiple reports of a building on fire.

The 46-year-old sole male occupant of the residence was not home at the time.

It will be alleged that a person forced entry to the man's utility before positioning it against the right side of the building and igniting the rear of the vehicle.

The fire quickly spread to the nearby residence, causing significant damage to its interior and destroying the vehicle.

It's further alleged that the person also stole a tinnie on a boat trailer from the Ashmore address around the time of the fire, then subsequently set it on fire at Henri Robert Drive, Clagiraba, around 7pm.

Following investigations, officers executed a search warrant at a Hope Island address on Saturday, where they arrested a 27-year-old man of no fixed address.

He has since been charged with four counts of arson and one count each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing a vessel and stealing a vehicle.

He is scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court today, Monday March 11.
