Powerful boost under way for local electricity supply

Nearly 10,000 local homes and businesses are set to benefit from a $3.1 million upgrade of the Energex substation at Kenmore.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the project, which is in the Palaszczuk Government's 2019-20 State budget, includes installing new electricity switching equipment at the Mirbelia Street facility, and associated electrical work.

Dr Lynham said the $3.1 million investment would improve reliability and help accommodate local growth in Kenmore, Kenmore Hills, Brookfield, Chapel Hill and parts of Fig Tree Pocket.

"Brisbane's western suburbs have experienced steady growth over many years and these upgrades are designed to cater for current and future electrical needs of the area," Dr Lynham said.

"The upgrades will secure the substation's capacity while at the same time vastly improve the technical capabilities of the substation allowing Energex technicians to switch power around the local network much faster.

"This will be particularly handy during storms and other emergency power outages."

Dr Lynham said the upgrades were part of the State Government's investment in infrastructure for Queensland communities to support current and future growth.

"While people are the heart of any community, infrastructure is the backbone and a quality electricity network certainly breathes life into the things people do every day," Dr Lynham said.

"A safe and reliable electricity network is essential for the western suburbs and surrounds to provide a safe and reliable power supply to homes, and to support growth for local businesses."

Work on the substation's upgrades is now under way and expected to be completed in December this year.
