Powering Ahead On Level Crossing Removals In West

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is powering ahead with works across Melton and Truganina, as it undertakes a blitz of construction to remove four dangerous and congested level crossings and deliver a new Melton Station.

Starting from Saturday morning until the last service Sunday, 14 September, buses will replace trains between Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs as crews work around the clock to demolish the existing Melton Station.

Further works will include testing and commissioning rail signalling, building foundations for two rail bridges at Exford and Coburns roads, lifting beams and building decks for the road bridges at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina.

When trains return to the line on Monday 15 September, passengers will use a temporary Melton Station, and there will be some pedestrian access changes in the area. The temporary station was built to keep passengers moving while the new station is under construction.

Road detours will also be in place, with Exford Road in Melton closed at the level crossing from 8:00pm tonight until 5:00am, Thursday 11 September.

From next year, new rail bridges will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads and new road bridges will carry vehicles over the rail line at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina.

The new state-of-the-art Melton Station will also open in 2026 and it will be elevated to give pedestrians and passengers an accessible underpass to each of the four platforms.

These works are backed by the Labor Government's $650 million Melton Line Upgrade, which will boost passenger capacity by 50 per cent by allowing nine-car trains to run on the line in 2027, a year ahead of schedule. Site investigations for the project will take place while trains are not running this month.

Across Melbourne, 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 87 already gone for good, transforming the way people live, work and travel.

Passengers and motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time. To plan your journey, visit bigbuild.vic.gov.au.
