Update on rental price indexes − flow measures

The flow measure of rental price indexes was reinstated in the Selected price indexes: November 2025 release.

We worked with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on the data requirements for the flow measure of the rental price indexes. This data has not been included since November 2024, as work was needed to integrate the data following an update to MBIE's tenancy bond-lodgement system and to ensure it met customer expectations. Stats NZ took additional time to validate the data to ensure it meets customer expectations and is fit for use in calculating flow measures of rental properties.

The complete time series from December 2024 to November 2025 was calculated and released on 16 December 2025. Some caution is advised regarding the quality of the data between December 2024 and May 2025. Stats NZ thanks MBIE and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for their collaboration, which made it possible to release the latest data and meet our customers' expectations.

The flow measure does not impact the CPI.
