Prison system in disarray: DoJ report

Tasmanian Labor
  • Serious prison assaults up 62 per cent
  • System officially lacks resources
  • Liberals must act on report's findings
  • The Department of Justice annual report paints a damning picture of the prison system under the Liberals watch.

Shadow Corrections Minister, Ella Haddad, said the Liberals tough talk on crime has now officially been dismantled.

"Prisoner on staff and prisoner on prisoner assaults are both up to almost 1 per fortnight and 2 per week respectively, with serious prisoner on prisoner assaults up over 62 per cent," Ms Haddad said.

"And of course, just a month ago a dangerous criminal escaped from minimum security prison when he should have been classified as higher security.

"It is clear that overcrowding and underfunding of the system has led to this dangerous situation.

"This Government's mismanagement of the Tasmanian prison system puts correctional officer and inmates at risk.

"The Custodial Inspector has said in his annual report that he does not have the resources to adequately provide oversight of the current prison system, let alone a new prison."
