Proactive Policing Of Rock Lobster Season, TAS

Marine and country police officers will proactively police on the water and at ramping areas as the Rock Lobster season opens in Tasmania’s western region tomorrow and then extends to the eastern region on 18 November, Tasmania Police say.

"With the opening of the Rock Lobster season, it’s timely for us to remind recreational fishers to not only be safe on the water, but to be aware of the fisheries rules and regulations," said Acting Inspector Bill Grierson from Police Marine and Rescue Services.

"In preparation for the first weekend of the season, we urge all recreational fishers to undertake last minute checks of their boats and safety gear and familiarise themselves with fisheries rules and regulations.

"Catch limits and licence requirements are designed to protect and sustain the fishery environment and are readily available to everyone.

"Ignorance is not a reasonable excuse for people illegally fishing and they risk substantial fines and seizures of their fishing gear and vessels."

Police will proactively target hot spots anecdotally known for illegal fishing activity. Anyone with information about people potentially doing the wrong thing can call Fish Watch on their 24-hr hotline 0427 655 557.
