Probe into Attempted Arson at Docklands Gelateria

Detectives from VIPER Taskforce are appealing for information as part of their investigation into an incident where two people attempted to light a fire at a Docklands gelateria in January.

It's believed two males forced their way into the Star Crescent business about 5am on Wednesday, 17 January.

After smashing the glass door, the pair poured accelerant from a jerry can on the floor and serving bench then attempted to light the liquid.

Despite a number of attempts, the liquid failed to ignite and the pair ran from the store.

It's believed they then left the area with a third person in a distinctive gold Hyundai Sonata sedan with registration plates 1TI1EX.

At the time of the incident, the men were wearing dark coloured clothing and face coverings.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information about those involved.

Detectives are also keen to speak to anyone who has information about the current whereabouts of the gold Hyundai and are asking members of the public to keep a look out for it.

They are releasing an image of it in the hope someone can provide information on the car's current whereabouts.

Police are treating the incident as targeted, however the exact motivation for the attempted fire remains unclear.

Detectives are also looking at whether there is a connection between this incident and any other fires in the area.

Investigators urge anyone who has further information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
