Two people have died following a serious crash at Kooragang near Newcastle this morning.
About 9.25am (Tuesday 17 February 2026), emergency services were called to Cormorant Road, Kooragang, following reports of a crash.
At the scene, police were told that a sedan and van had crashed in the northbound lanes.
NSW Ambulance paramedics rendered assistance to the occupants of the sedan; however, they died at the scene. They are yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the van was treated at the scene for minor injuries. He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.
About 9.45am, a 42-year-old man attended Waratah Police Station allegedly reporting he was involved in a crash. The man was arrested and taken to the John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.
Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash are underway by Newcastle City Police, assisted by the Crash Investigation Unit.

The northbound lanes of Cormorant Road (towards Stockton) remain closed, and are expected to remain closed for some time while the scene is examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and follow the directions of traffic controllers and police.
