Opportunities to generate profit growth within Gippsland grain growing enterprises will be explored at a farm business forum next month.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a Farm Business Update at Sale on March 6 where topics such as dual-purpose crops, hyper-yielding cereals, self-managed superannuation funds and building resilience within farming systems will be on the agenda.

GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Darren Arney, says the Farm Business Update will be an important forum for discussing avenues for building farm profitability.

"Beyond the day-to-day tactics that growers employ to address agronomic issues on-farm, opportunities exist for growers to generate improved returns through new strategic approaches to their farming systems," Mr Arney said.

"The GRDC Farm Business Update at Sale presents Gippsland growers with a unique opportunity to hear from highly respected experts who will provide valuable insights and advice to assist in underpinning positive farm enterprise changes."

Maximising the economic outcomes of grazing crops will be the topic of a presentation by Nicon Rural consultant Cam Nicholson.

With buoyant livestock prices stimulating an increase in the number of growers opting for dual-purpose crops, Mr Nicholson will discuss how benefits can be realised from grazing higher value cereal crops without impacting on yield-based financial returns.

Darcy Warren from the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) Australia will detail the GRDC’s Hyper Yielding Cereals Project which is working towards setting record yields as aspirational goals for growers of feed grains.

Ben Lancaster and Wayne Dowd of DMG Financial will provide guidelines for investment in self-managed superannuation funds, while consultant Ken Solly will outline the core attributes of a prosperous business and identify the characteristics of the key profit drivers of a resilient business.
