The Redistribution Committee for the ACT published its report today proposing new boundaries for the territory's three federal electorates.
Committee Chair and Electoral Commissioner, Jeff Pope, said that two out of Canberra's three federal electorates currently don't meet the numerical requirements.
"Under the proposal, around 10 per cent of people enrolled in the ACT would change electorate - enabling all three electorates to meet the numerical requirements," Mr Pope said.
"In a jurisdiction entitled to just three electorates, options for how to shape them can be limited. The Committee's proposal takes account of existing boundaries while proposing relatively small movements that align communities of interest."
Under the proposal:
- The electorate of Bean would include all the Woden Valley District. It loses the Molonglo Valley District, part of Duffy, and Norfolk Island.
- The electorate of Canberra would gain the Molonglo Valley District, part of Duffy, the suburbs of Crace, Kenny and Mitchell, as well as Norfolk Island. It would lose Hawker, Macquarie and Weetangera, and part of the Woden Valley district (Curtin, Garran, Hughes and Lyons).
- The electorate of Fenner would gain Hawker, Macquarie and Weetangera. It would lose Crace, Kenny and Mitchell.
"All proposed changes were driven by the need to balance not just the current enrolment numbers but also projected enrolment in each electorate – making changes that account for projected growth corridors can ensure electorates remain as even as possible moving forward."
No changes to the names of ACT electorates were proposed by the Committee. However, members of the public are encouraged to suggest potential names in the next round of public input.
