Parking fees to remain the same in proposed Budget
Parking fees will not rise in the Greater Bendigo City Council's 2019/2020 proposed Budget, but parking infringement fines will increase to $83 for drivers who do not pay for a parking ticket or drivers who stay longer in time-restricted parking areas.
Mayor Cr Margaret O'Rourke said parking fines in the Bendigo region had remained significantly low compared to other regional municipalities.
"The increase in the fine brings the City in line with many other comparable regional shires," Cr O'Rourke said.
"The money raised from the increased parking fines over time will also help to pay for new parking technology such as credit card facilities and 'pay by app' options, which will make parking easier and more accessible for the wider community.
"The revenue raised from these fines also allows us to keep parking fees at the same rate as last year.
"We hope that the new increase could help to change the behaviour of drivers who do not abide by parking rules. We know that around a third are repeat offenders.
"If drivers follow the parking rules, they won't get a fine and it will free up more parking spaces for everyone else."
