Devonport City Council's proposed Parking By-Law No.1 of 2023 is now out for public consultation. In accordance with Local Government Act 1993 (the "Act") requirements, public submissions may be made regarding the proposed By-Law, with submissions to be received by 5:00pm on Tuesday 8 August 2023.
It is intended that the proposed By-Law replaces Council's current Parking By-Law, which expires in November 2023.
By-laws are generally adopted by councils to assist in the regulation and management of operations where legislation does not exist to assist in meeting this purpose. Council resolved at its meeting of February 2023 to make a new By-Law. A Certificate approving the associated Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) has been
received from the Director of Local Government, in accordance with the Act.
The purpose of the proposed By-Law is to regulate and control car parks belonging to or controlled by the Devonport City Council and section 100 of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982.

"The consultation process for by-laws affords the community an opportunity to provide feedback, whilst ensuring that Council meets is legislative obligations", Devonport Mayor, Cr Alison Jarman said.
"The proposed Parking By-Law is to replace the current by-law which expires later this year. The by-law supports Council to regulate and control parking within car parks in the municipal area, ensuring accessibility, safety and amenity.
The by-law develops measures aimed at maintaining the integrity of parking facilities, in addition to a focus on the welfare and protection of those who use Council owned or controlled car parks, through prohibiting inappropriate activities and behaviours within these spaces", Mayor Jarman said.
