Brisbane's annual Oktoberfest has officially begun with the traditional Anzapfen ceremony, during which the first keg is tapped.
Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe was on hand to receive the first stein after Brisbane's Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner followed a centuries-old tradition by tapping the keg.
"This is one of the most popular multicultural festivals in Queensland and I'm delighted to play a role in the traditional opening," Mr Hinchliffe said.
"Now in its 12th year, there's no doubt Oktoberfest has become an important fixture on Brisbane's social calendar as Australia's largest German festival.
"It's not surprising though, as a love of beer is one of the common passions Queensland shares with Germany.
"Queenslanders of German heritage have made a huge contribution to the State ever since the first German Migrants settled here in the mid-1800s.
"Today, Queensland is home to more than 20,000 people who were born in Germany and almost 300,000 identify with having a German background.
"Queenslanders of German heritage have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to all aspects of life in Queensland including in business, education, the arts and culture, and socially, as part of our multicultural tapestry.
"Our diversity is one of the reasons Queensland is such a great place to live, work and on an occasion like this, play.
"I am so proud to be part of a government that is committed to promoting an inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland, a place where we strive to ensure that everyone feels a strong sense of opportunity and belonging.
"I would like to congratulate the organisers and wish everyone who comes to Oktoberfest Brisbane a wonderful time. Prost!"
