Providing more choice for Tasmanians looking for a home

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Planning

The Hodgman Liberal Government will develop new planning rules that focus on medium rise developments and in-fill projects that provide attractive options for Tasmanians looking for an urban lifestyle whilst still retaining the character of existing neighbourhoods.

We recognise that there is no one, single solution to the challenges in our housing market right now, and we know that increasing supply across the entire housing spectrum is key to meeting our increased demand. We have heard this message loud and clear.

Tasmanians are seeking out different types of housing to meet their needs. Increasingly, young couples, empty-nesters and key workers are demanding more choice across the housing spectrum, particularly in our cities. They want to live close to work and the benefits of inner-city living.

Current planning settings do not cater well for apartment style developments.

As with all our planning rules, the new infill development standards will be developed in consultation with the public, and subject to independent assessment by the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

This is just another initiative the Hodgman Liberal Government is pursuing to boost housing supply, and will add to our other initiatives including our $125 million investment through Stage Two of our Affordable Housing Strategy, the largest state government investment into affordable housing in Tasmania's history.
