PSPA Declaration:Gas leak, Cairns North

Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) due to an ongoing incident involving a gas leak in Cairns North.

Around 12.40pm today an emergency response occurred after a gas main ruptured following earthworks in the area.

As a result, a 100 metre exclusion zone has been established in the vicinity of Grove and Sheridan Streets.

Occupants within businesses, including motels, in the affected area are urged to remain indoors.

As well, residents in the nearby area are urged to keep doors and windows closed as the wind carries the gas away.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
