PSPA declared at Cairns

Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) in relation to a ruptured gas line in Portsmith, Cairns.

A declaration was made at 8.53am and emergency service crews are currently stabilising the area around the leak.

The PSPA encompasses the area surrounding Draper and Kenny Streets, including Owen Close, Plath Close, Bunda Street and Spence Street which are all closed.

Gas users in the Cairns CBD and surrounds may experience a loss of supply within the next 15 minutes as gas lines are closed in order to maintain the safety of emergency crews.

It is not known at this stage how long the gas supplies will be shut down.

Motorists are advised that road closures associated with the incident will remain in place until further notice.

Mulgrave Road will be the preferred route for traffic inbound and outbound via the southern corridor.
