As part of the Finocchiaro CLP Government's Year of Growth, Certainty and Security, the Northern Territory Government is undertaking a review of the Associations Act 2003. delivering on our commitment to rebuild the economy and support strong, resilient community organisations.
The review will ensure the legislative framework remains modern, robust, and fit for purpose for the Territory's business and community associations.
This work follows recent legislative changes to incorporated association tier levels, which eased administrative burdens for smaller associations by reducing auditing requirements. These reforms allow volunteer‑run organisations to focus on delivering important services for Territorians rather than navigating unnecessary red tape.
Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill, said "associations and clubs are central to community life in the Territory, and strengthening the legislative framework ensures these organisations can continue to thrive and deliver for the community."
Stage 2 of the review will examine opportunities to strengthen compliance, governance, and dispute‑resolution processes, bringing the Territory into alignment with other jurisdictions across Australia. Ensuring the Act remains contemporary will support the long‑term sustainability and accountability of associations operating in the NT.
The Northern Territory Government is seeking feedback from incorporated associations, the business community, industry groups, government agencies, and the broader public. Consultation is open until 20 March 2026.
