Public Input Sought on Renaming Prince Henry Drive Park

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is inviting the community the share their feedback on a proposal to rename a section of bushland within Prince Henry Drive Park, in recognition of a local environmental advocate.

Council has received a request to formally name a small section of the park after the late Dr John Swarbrick, a long-term resident of Prince Henry Heights and former Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in Gatton. Dr Swarbrick was a leading expert in weed management and a passionate advocate for the protection and restoration of native bushland.

TRC Parks and Recreation Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Tim McMahon said the renaming of the bushland area will help honour the 40 years of work by Dr Swarbrick within the Toowoomba Region.

"Dr Swarbrick was instrumental in restoring native vegetation in Toowoomba, particularly in the very bushland area that is now proposed to bear his name," Cr McMahon said.

"His work in eradicating invasive weeds laid the foundation for many of the environmental restoration efforts we see across our parks today. This naming proposal is a fitting way to honour Dr Swarbrick's legacy and Council's continuation of his long-standing commitment to our natural spaces."

Community members are encouraged to have their say by visiting the Have Your Say website: https://yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/prince-henry-drive-park and completing the short feedback form.

Submissions will be accepted until Friday 15 August 2025, after which Council will consider the feedback before making a final decision.
