Public Safety Infrastructure funding to light up Moreland's sporting facilities

11 March 2020

Moreland Mayor, Cr Lambros Tapinos joined Lizzie Blandthorn MP today at Sewell Reserve, Glenroy for the announcement of funding to develop public safety infrastructure in Moreland to improve community safety, security and access.

Moreland Council is providing almost $48,000 towards upgrades to public lighting, with an additional State Government contribution of more than $187,000 through the Community Crime Prevention Program.

Moreland Council will install new smart solar lighting with supporting poles at Sewell Reserve, Morris Reserve and Charles Mutton Reserve.

In line with Council's Zero Carbon Moreland strategy, the solar smart lighting emits no greenhouse gases once installed.

Lighting the pathways will complete the link to and from the sports facilities, to create a safer passage at night for the community.

Moreland Mayor Cr Lambros Tapinos said upgrading infrastructure to create safer, more accessible and inclusive environments was an important step to ensure open spaces, streets and facilities can be enjoyed at night.

"We look forward to seeing the Moreland community enjoying using these great sports facilities after dark into the future," said Cr Tapinos.

In 2019, Council successfully completed similar upgrades to lighting in six open spaces across Moreland, also funded under the Community Crime Prevention Program.

The upgrades in Sewell Reserve are expected to be completed by September 2020.
