Public Safety Response Team Capability for Townsville

Townsville now has a PSRT capability to boost community safety.

After more than 2000 hours of specialised training, the 22 members of the Townsville Tactical Crime Squad are now equipped and ready to deliver a PSRT capability for Townsville and surrounds.

This highly trained squad will constitute the "Townsville District Enhanced Public Order Capability".

Police Minister Mark Ryan said this special capability for Townsville was chosen by the District Officer in Charge of the Townsville region.

"Police are the experts when it comes to law and order and they know the capabilities they need.

"I commend Townsville police for creating the Enhanced Public Order Capability - a capability that they knew would best suit their needs.

"The intensive training these officers have undergone will enhance public safety in the Townsville District.

The training consists of crowd management, defensive shields, ballistic shields, small teams, inner cordon and hostage reception training.

To support this capability, the squad has been provided with PSRT resources including two tactical vehicles, shields, helmets, and accoutrements.

"It's another example of why the Queensland Police Service is internationally regarded as truly world class," Minister Ryan said.
