When Sarah Campbell moved to Cairns in 2017, she was promised a puppy. What she didn't expect was to fall in love at first sight.
"I saw some photos on Council's Facebook page of the puppies coming to the Dog Adoption Day, and I was one of the first in line – I had already fallen in love," she said.
Sarah met Reina (formerly Raven), one of the "Box Creek puppies" who had been abandoned and rescued.
"Her story broke my heart. If anyone can give a better life to a puppy, it will be the most rewarding thing you ever do. Reina is an endless source of love, her excitement to see me come home no matter how long I have been gone, makes my heart sing.
"She loves everything we do together from the same walk route every weekday, to chasing birds down the beach. She sings to her favourite songs, and "advises" me whenever someone walks down our street.
"I encourage everyone to adopt not shop and save the life of a beautiful little furry soul," Sarah said.
Now, Cairns Regional Council is giving more dogs the chance to find their fur-ever homes with the return of its annual Dog Adoption Day, held this Saturday 2 August, from 9am to 1pm at the Aeroglen Dog Off-Leash Park, next to Touch Park.
This much-loved community event brings together local rescue legends - YAPS, North Queensland Animal Rescue, RSPCA Cairns, Cairns Animal Rescue, and Rags to Riches - for a morning of puppy cuddles and new beginnings.
Cr Anna Middleton, a proud dog lover herself, said the adoption day is one of the most heartwarming dates on the Council calendar.
"These animals deserve a second chance, and the families who take them in often say the dog rescues them, not the other way around. I encourage anyone thinking of adopting to come along. Your new best mate could be waiting for you."
All dogs are de-sexed, vaccinated, and ready to head home with their new families.
