Pursuit arrest - Port Stephens, NSW

Police have arrested the driver of a car which allegedly led police on a pursuit in the Port Stephens area this morning, NSW Police say.

About 9.15am today, police attempted to stop a Holden sedan in Medowie in relation to ongoing inquiries into outstanding arrest warrants.

As police exited their car, the Holden was put into reverse, striking one officer and causing minor injuries. The officer attempted to take hold of the driver but was unsuccessful as the driver accelerated away.

A police pursuit was initiated but was terminated a short time later in nearby Williamtown due to the manner of driving.

That pursuit was reinitiated in Mayfield, with the Holden stopping a short time later due to mechanical issues. The driver ran from the scene, while two passengers, a 17-year-old boy and 20-year-old woman, were arrested.

The driver allegedly entered the cab of a truck and assaulted the driver before local police assisted by the Police Dog Unit pulled him from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

Industrial Drive, Mayfield, was closed for about 15 minutes during the police operation.

All three arrested people were taken to Waratah Police Station with the woman and 17-year-old boy later released without charge.

The 19-year-old man was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment to minor injuries before returning to the police station.

He is expected to be charged with a number of outstanding warrants and other offences.
