A 19-year-old is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today (22 January 2025) after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers allegedly located child abuse material on his mobile phone.

On Monday, 5 January 2025, ABF officers intercepted the Mackay resident after he arrived at Brisbane International Airport on a flight from Guangzhou, China with his parents and younger sibling.

During the baggage examination, officers allegedly located videos on the teenager's mobile phone that contained material prohibited under Regulation 4A of the Customs (prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.

ABF arrested and charged him with the importation of child abuse material contrary to subsection 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901.

Superintendent Amanda Coppleman said ABF officers use intelligence-led targeting and are highly trained to detect this abhorrent material to protect the most vulnerable members of the Australian community.

"Child abuse material is not abstract or victimless. It exists because real children have been abused, and its circulation continues that harm," SUPT Coppleman said.

"Stopping it at the border protects the Australian community from further harm.

"Anyone considering bringing child abuse material into Australia should understand that we are actively looking for it and we will take action when we find it."
