QUT has so far made around 10,500 QTAC offers for students to start their degrees in 2020, with about 45 per cent of those offers made to Queensland Year 12 school leavers.
In today’s (January 15) QTAC offer round, about 3600 offers from QUT for semester one this year will be received by both school leavers and other applicants.
QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil said, as expected, the reduced cohort of Queensland Year 12 students who graduated last year meant there were fewer applications from school leavers. QUT had planned for this and so has been able to make all its offers to applicants ranked in the top 30 per cent of the state.
Professor Sheil said trends among applicants’ choices observed in previous years had continued this year.
“For example, there is still a high demand for engineering, science, maths and information technology courses at our Gardens Point campus, thanks to the university’s strong focus on STEM engagement and our investment in excellent facilities,” she said.
“The QUT Business School at Gardens Point also remains a popular choice among applicants.
“The university is pleased to be able to offer places this year to most students who put QUT first on their QTAC applications.”
More than 2000 of the QUT QTAC offers made to date are for degree courses within the Science and Engineering Faculty and about 1600 for the QUT Business School.
Across Creative Industries, which is largely based at QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus, about 1800 offers have so far been issued. Strong demand has also been seen for degrees in the health sciences, with courses such as medical imaging, optometry and paramedic science filling up in this January offer round.
Professor Sheil said the growing trend for students seeking programs that combine different expertise was also continuing.
“QUT introduced 38 new double degree programs last year and these have again proven popular,” she said.
“Overall, about 20 per cent of all offers QUT has made for this year are for double degree programs, with students particularly interested in combining a creative pursuit, legal or STEM focus with a business qualification.”
