Quarry re boot to service Sydneys West

CSR's Badgerys Creek quarry will re-open this year after nearly a decade to provide much-needed brickmaking materials for Sydney's fast-growing west.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment's Executive Director of Energy and Resource Assessments Mike Young said the NSW Government has approved an application to allow quarrying and rehabilitation work to begin at the site again for 11 years, paving the way for 100 new jobs and unlocking new industrial land.

"This approval includes rehabilitating 110 hectares of previously quarried land next to the new Western Sydney Airport, creating the opportunity for future industrial facilities and job opportunities close to where people live in Sydney's west," Mr Young said.

"Water collected in the quarry pits over the past decade will also be used to improve air quality by suppressing dust during construction of the Western Sydney Airport, reducing demand on Sydney's potable water supply."

The approval to continue operations is the latest project to be assessed under NSW Government's Planning System Acceleration Program, which has to date created opportunities for thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars in investment.

To date, the program has created opportunities for almost 43,000 new jobs and injected $18.9 billion into the NSW economy.

A separate application to expand and upgrade CSR's existing Badgerys Creek brickmaking facility has also been approved by the Department.

The upgraded brickmaking facility will support the construction industry in NSW and inject a further $150 million in capital investment in Sydney's west and create a further 70 jobs.
