22,000 children will continue to benefit from community kindergarten programs with a $17 million Queensland Government support package.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said although the COVID-19 figures were again encouraging, with 12 new cases, community kindergartens had falling enrolments.

"Our funding will support 465 of them to stay open in term 2 and, importantly, to provide their programs free of charge for families for this period," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I know this will be an added relief to a lot of parents who have been speaking to the Education Minister and myself about what is going to happen with community kindergarten.

"So some really good news today."

  • In relation to schools in term 2, an announcement will be made by Tuesday.

"So there will be ample time to let parents know about the situation," the Premier said.

"There are issues with internet access. They can get hard copies of the curriculum, and we'll also be looking at other options for study through some television networks."

  • Meanwhile the Premier praised the behaviour of Queenslanders so far over Easter, with 12 new cases for a total of 983.

"Of course we know we still have a very long way to go, but all of the signs are encouraging and it is clearly evident that Australia is indeed flattening the COVID-19 curve," she said.

"So a big thank you to Queenslanders doing the right thing. Keep up the great work."
