The Crisafulli Government has announced the appointment of esteemed public sector leader Deborah Platz APM as Queensland's new Human Rights Commissioner.

In her most recent role as the New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES), Deputy Commissioner Operations, Ms Platz has been responsible for safeguarding communities from natural disasters and has been recognised for demonstrating a deep commitment to representing vulnerable people.

Her valuable contribution to the SES was preceded by her role as Assistant Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service (QPS), where she led the management and prevention of terrorism threats and security-related matters.

Ms Platz has devoted most of her career to the public service and law enforcement, starting as a QPS constable in 1985, to becoming a detective with the Child Protection and Investigation Unit, where she fought for the rights of our State's most vulnerable children.

Her career also includes significant roles in the Australian Federal Police (AFP), including as Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner Operations, where she led an international team to combat complex organised crime and developed workplace culture training programs.

Ms Platz was named International Female Officer of the Year by the International Association of Women and Police in 2016, awarded Most Outstanding Female Leader of the QPS, and awarded an Australian Police Medal and a Queensland Police Service medal for her ethical and diligent service.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington congratulated the new Commissioner on her well-deserved appointment.

"Deborah Platz is an experienced and compassionate leader and I am confident she will make a significant contribution to the Queensland community in the years ahead," the Attorney-General said.

"Throughout her public service career, she has seen firsthand the negative consequences of human rights abuses. This experience is invaluable when advocating for fairness, justice, and safety for all Queenslanders.

"I am delighted to welcome her as the new Queensland Human Rights Commissioner."

Ms Platz said her new appointment represented more than a career move.

"This role is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully and align my work with a vision that inspires and provides better outcomes for all Queenslanders," Ms Platz said.

"I am energised by the opportunity to step into this new role that presents a challenge while allowing me to draw on my extensive experience.

"I know how to deliver results and am ready to bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions that will enhance performance and drive meaningful outcomes."

The appointment was made following an open advertisement and merit-based selection process to recruit a new Commissioner.

Ms Platz commences a five-year term in the role on 30 January 2026.
