National Police Remembrance Day (NPRD) has been recognised today by Queensland Police Service (QPS) alongside police jurisdictions across Australia, as we pause to reflect on the lives of police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice whilst protecting their community.
NPRD has been observed annually on 29 September since 1989, and honours police officers from across Australia and the South Pacific who have died as a result of their duty.
NPRD is the most significant day on the policing calendar, providing an opportunity for officers, staff, families and community to reflect on the extraordinary commitment to those who dedicated their lives to protecting others.
Across Queensland, commemorative services have been held to honour the men and women behind the names etched in our history, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities with the courage, integrity and professionalism that comes with being a Queensland police officer.
The passing of time will never diminish the loss experienced by the loved ones of the fallen officers, NPRD serves as a reminder that the fallen officers will never be forgotten.
Their legacy continues through the lives they touched, the communities they protected, the colleagues they inspired, and the families who proudly carry their memory forward.
Queensland Police Service Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing said National Police Remembrance Day was a solemn occasion to honour the courage, service and sacrifice of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
"Every day, police put on their uniform knowing they may be called upon to face situations that most people never will. They do so with courage and an unwavering commitment to keeping Queenslanders safe," Acting Commissioner Pointing said.
"Behind every name on our honour roll is a family whose life was changed forever.
"Today, we not only remember those we have passed, but we also stand with the families who continue to carry that loss.
"Their names are etched into our history, but more importantly, they remain part of the Queensland police family. We remember them today, tomorrow and always.
Today, Queensland police officers, staff and members of the community will stand together in remembrance, reflecting on the lives, service and sacrifice of those who gave everything in the protection of others.
