Queensland Rail Urges Caution: Travel With Care

• More people are slipping, tripping and falling on Queensland Rail's network, with 373 customers injured in 2024.
• Queensland Rail is urging all customers to 'Travel with Care', as most injuries are preventable.
• Injury hotspots include the busiest stations on the network like Central and Roma Street.
Customers taking luggage and other heavy items on escalators and stairs, distraction and rushing are causing hundreds of preventable injuries on Queensland Rail's network, prompting the rail operator to implore customers to 'Travel with Care.'
Footage of real-life examples of stumbling, tumbling and tripping have been released with footage showing several customers coming unstuck on the escalators with cumbersome luggage.
In another video, a customer is walking in front of the yellow line and takes a tumble straight onto the tracks.
With fares just 50-cents and more customers than ever before choosing to travel by rail, customer slips, trips, and falls are also trending up with 373 customer injuries reported in 2024, compared to 288 incidents the previous year.
Injuries ranged from a scrape or bruise to more serious cases, with 53 customers so badly injured they need major treatment. While that figure is down on the previous year (71 major treatment injuries in 2023), it is still concerning.
The staggering statistics prompted Queensland Rail to revitalise its 'Travel with Care' campaign to focus on the stations with the highest cases of customer injuries like Central and Roma Street stations.
New posters, social media videos, customer engagement and in-train announcements urge everyone to allow plenty of time to catch the train and avoid distractions like mobile phones while walking.
Customers have also been reminded to hold the handrail when using escalators and stairs and take the lift when travelling with large items like luggage or a pram, bike or scooter.
QUOTES As put by QUEENSLAND RAIL SENIOR MANAGER OF SAFETY AND SECURITY DREW BROCK:
"We want all our customers to have safe and enjoyable journeys, free from injury and we're really worried to see 373 people hurt on our network last year.
"We had more than 50 million trips in 2024, so we've reinvigorated our 'Travel with Care' campaign to help remind people the simple steps they can take to ensure everyone stays safe.
"Allow plenty of time for your journey - there'll be another train coming soon.
"So many of these injuries are caused by customers taking their luggage, bikes or scooters on escalators - please use the lifts when travelling with these items.
"Remember to be aware of other customers around you because running into someone or losing a heavy item on the stairs or escalators could cause a serious injury to someone else.
"Put your phone away and watch whereyou are going and hold the handrail while on the stairs.
"Please always stay behind the yellow line until the train comes to a complete stop."
