Racially motivated assault in Melbourne

Police are appealing for witnesses following a racially motivated assault on a St Kilda Road tram on 25 Ma, Victoria Police sayy

Investigators have been told that two men and two women were on the northbound tram about 10pm.

A group of six teens got onto the tram and approached the men and women.

One of the teens started making derogatory comments which has escalated to the whole group racially abusing the men and women.

Other passengers stepped in and moved the teens on.

During the altercation one of the teens stole a victim’s phone.

The victim tried to stop the offender from getting off the tram but was assaulted by the offender and the rest of his group.

The victim’s friends tried to stop the fight and were also assaulted.

The offenders got off the tram and were last seen heading toward Queen Victoria Gardens.

Police have released images and CCTV footage of a group of people they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
