Rail Works: December-January Track Closures

  • Customers are advised to plan ahead for travel in December and January due to track closures across the South East Queensland (SEQ) rail network.
  • The closures are necessary to ensure the safety of workers in the rail corridor as the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority undertakes critical surface rail works and Queensland Rail carries out essential maintenance, shaping the once in a generation projects that will revolutionise rail travel in Queensland.
  • Every line on the network will be impacted at various times, so customers are encouraged to plan their journey each time they travel.

Train customers are urged to plan their travel in advance in December and January, as track closures and travel changes will impact all lines at various stages over a five-week period.

The track closures, scheduled from 20 December to 26 January, will allow essential works to be undertaken safely and efficiently in the rail corridor.

Crews will undertake a range of works as part of the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority's broader transformation of the SEQ rail network. These works include installation of new signalling infrastructure, forming new tracks, and conducting drainage works between Albion and Bowen Hills, as well as cable relocation and testing, overhead and communications wiring installation, and under-track crossing installation between Salisbury and Boggo Road station.

Queensland Rail will also use this time to carry out track maintenance works between Bowen Hills, Wooloowin and Ferny Grove as well as on the Cleveland line in the New Year.

These works are critical to prepare for South East Queensland's once-in-a-generation rail network transformation, which will deliver significant benefits for rail customers in the future.

During the first week of the works program (20 December to 28 December), all lines will be impacted by track closures and travel changes. Buses will replace trains on all lines between Roma Street and Northgate/Eagle Junction and on the Ferny Grove line.

On 20 and 21 December, Beenleigh and Gold Coast line trains will run as a combined all-stops service between Varsity Lakes and Banoon stations. Buses will replace trains between Yeerongpilly and Banoon.

From 22 to 24 December, stations from Roma Street to Northgate/Eagle Junction station and the Ferny Grove line will be closed. Buses will replace trains during this time.

From 29 December to 1 January, all train lines will operate on a special timetable, with additional New Years Eve bus and train services.

All train lines will run to a regular timetable on 2 January.

From 3 January to 26 January, Beenleigh and Gold Coast line trains will run as a combined all-stops service between Varsity Lakes and Banoon stations. From 3 to 11 January, buses will replace trains between Yeerongpilly and Banoon stations. From 12 to 26 January, buses will replace trains between Boggo Road and Banoon stations.

Buses will also replace trains between Cleveland and Manly stations on the long weekend from 24 to 26 January for Queensland Rail to facilitate a three-day track recondition of the Birkdale Road overbridge.

All services will return to a regular timetable from first service on Tuesday 27 January 2026 for the start of the new school year.

As stated by Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton

"The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority is responsible for more than just the underground tunnels - our crews are undertaking a variety of surface works that will support the wider transformation of South East Queensland's rail network.

"While trains aren't running, crews will be busy in the rail corridor constructing new stabling yards to increase the number of trains that can be accommodated on the network, track works, installing signalling infrastructure, testing signalling and communications systems, and undertaking upgrade works at Dutton Park, Salisbury and Moorooka stations."

As stated by Acting Head of Translink Dean Helm

"These works are part of a wider transformation to South East Queensland's rail network, which will support our growing population and readiness for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"If you are travelling during this period, please consider your transport options, plan ahead and allow plenty of travel time.

"We understand this will be an inconvenience to customers which is why these works occur mostly during the school holidays, when less customers travel on the network.

"We will have plenty of services available to help get you where you need to go, including connections to regular bus routes and rail replacement buses.

"All rail replacement bus timetables will be in the journey planner, so please check the Translink website closer to the closure date."
