Cancer is the leading cause of death in this country, with one in three Australians developing some form of the disease by the age of 85. We all know of the devastating impact it has on Tasmanians, their families, friends, colleagues and the community.
This is why it is important to recognise that today is the 20th anniversary of World Cancer Day, which provides an opportunity to raise greater public awareness and engagement in the global fight against cancer.
This year's theme 'I Am and I Will' aims to recognise that individual and community actions – both big and small – can help to reduce the number of unnecessary or premature cancer-related deaths.
The Tasmanian majority Liberal Government recognises that early, regular screening is helping to continue to improve cancer survival rates through early detection, with those diagnosed earlier usually having better outcomes, with treatment more successful.
This is why we have made significant investments into cancer services as part of our commitment to deliver a better health system for all Tasmanians.
We, along with the Morrison Government, have announced $28 million to upgrade the State's ageing oncology equipment, with four new Linear Accelerators to be installed across the state this year – two for the WP Holman Clinic at the Launceston General Hospital and two for the WP Holman Clinic at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Since opening in 2016, the North West Cancer Centre has delivered radiology and oncology treatments on the North West, significantly reducing the need for patients to travel to access these services.
Our Government also provides a free screening and cancer prevention service for Tasmanians to encourage check-ups and the early detection of breast, cervical and bowel cancers.
