Ramingining Police have seized approximately 24 kilograms of kava, more than $21,000 in cash and a Toyota Hilux following a traffic apprehension near Ramingining.
Police located and apprehended a 44-year-old man approximately two kilometres from Ramingining Community.
The 44-year-old Tongan national was arrested and charged with:
- Possessing/supplying a commercial quantity of kava
- Entering Aboriginal land without a permit
- Hindering or obstructing police
- Destroying evidence
- Dealing with $10,000 or more in proceeds of crime
The man was remanded in custody and is due to appear before the Darwin Local Court on Monday 28 September 2026.
Remote Sergeant Noel Santiago said the seizure was a positive result for local police and the Ramingining community.
"Illegal kava is a significant concern for remote communities, particularly where substance misuse is already impacting individuals, families and the wider community.
"People who supply these substances for profit take advantage of existing vulnerabilities within our communities.
"This seizure demonstrates that Ramingining Police will continue to target the supply of illegal kava and other substances that cause harm."
