Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset has officially launched the call for nominations for the Raoul Wallenberg Prize 2026. The prize is awarded every two years to an individual, a group of individuals or an organisation for an outstanding achievement to defend human rights.
The prize is named after Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who used his status in Budapest to save tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust. His actions show that one person's courage and ability can really make a difference, offering inspiration to us all to speak out and to act against persecution, xenophobia and antisemitism. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2025. The prize will be awarded in Strasbourg around 17 January 2026. (Wallenberg was arrested on 17 January 1945 by Soviet forces. He was never seen alive again).
