The Rathmines inclusive playspace became the third project in the western lakeside suburb to receive NSW government funding in recent months. Under round three of the NSW Government's Everyone Can Play grants program, Council is benefiting from $290,000 towards a distinctive and inclusive playspace to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said ensuring Lake Macquarie City offers people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds access to play spaces is essential. "Accessible play equipment not only helps young people with a disability to socialise and make new friends – it also allows them to stay active. Inclusive playspaces provide wonderful spaces for families and friends to play, relax and connect, and this funding will help make our community more inclusive than ever before."

In late 2020, Council also received more than $887,000 through the Resources for Regions round seven funding program for Rathmines Youth Hub and new floodlighting at Rathmines' Fishburn Fields. "The population on the western side of the Lake continues to grow and providing new facilities and infrastructure for our thriving community is essential."

Council will also contribute $1.6m towards the delivery of these three projects in western Lake Macquarie. Construction on the lighting project is expected to commence in April 2021, with construction on the playspace planned for late 2021.

About the Rathmines Park Playspace

Encompassing natural and sensory play elements, signature play components such as a Catalina plane-themed climbing frame and learn to ride track, the playspace will provide a diverse range of experiences and opportunities for all ages and abilities. Integral to providing a space for everyone to access and enjoy is the inclusion of new accessible amenities, picnic shelters and parking. New fitness stations and a connecting network of pathways will be a valuable addition in encouraging intergenerational activity.
