Readout of Foreign Affairs Minister's meets with Indian counterpart

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, to Canada yesterday.

The meeting was an occasion to reinforce the long-standing friendship between Canada and India, based on a shared commitment to democracy and the rules-based international order, as well as strong people-to-people ties and growing economic engagement.

Minister Champagne and Minister Jaishankar discussed concrete actions to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Canada and India through shared priorities, such as trade and investment, gender equality, climate change, and peace and security.

Minister Champagne also discussed pluralism, human rights and issues of regional concern, including the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Human rights, diversity and inclusion are at the core of Canada's foreign policy; their importance is reflected in all of our discussions with international partners.

The ministers look forward to continuing to increase cooperation, including a roadmap for revitalizing the various bilateral mechanisms that exist to do so.
