Rear-End Crashes, Failure to Yield Lead Aussie Collisions

NRMA Insurance recommends the following steps to reduce the risk of animal collisions:

  • Avoid driving at dawn, dusk, or night-time where possible as this is usually when animals are most active, and lack of light makes it more difficult to see them.

  • It's important to have a good night's sleep before a long drive and schedule regular breaks, ideally a 15-minute break every two hours.

  • Reduce your speed inside signposted wildlife areas.

  • If you see an animal on or near the road, you should try to slowly brake and avoid swerving.

  • If you hit an animal, and it is safe to do so, you should check the animal's welfare and contact your local wildlife rescue service.

NRMA Insurance supports National Road Safety Week and its central focus to encourage drivers to take the Pledge to Drive So Others Survive, publicly committing to safer choices behind the wheel.
