Reconstruction starts on Flinders Highway

Reconstruction works to flood-damaged sections of the Flinders Highway have begun.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said emergency repairs were fast-tracked after the February monsoon that soaked North Queensland.

“I saw first-hand the severe impact of the flooding, where entire sections of the road had been washed away,” Mr Bailey said.

“Assessments of the damage done to the Flinders Highway have been completed and reconstruction works are now the priority.

“Works starting this week will focus on the Hughenden to Richmond and Richmond to Julia Creek sections of the Flinders Highway in the Richmond Shire Council area.

“Works have already started on Richmond–Winton Road, which meets the Flinders Highway near Richmond.

“Reconstruction works on this section are expected to be completed later this year, before the coming wet season, weather permitting.”

In addition to disaster repairs, Transport and Main Roads will complete jointly-funded works to improve flood resilience on the Flinders Highway.

“These projects will involve full-width road reconstruction and a modified seal to reduce the risk of damage in future floods,” Mr Bailey said.

“This will enhance the highway’s resilience which is a critical route from Mount Isa through to Townsville.

“Works are expected to begin on an eight-kilometre section from Hughenden to Richmond, later this month, and a seven-kilometre section from Richmond to Julia Creek in early October.”

During roadworks, speed restrictions and traffic control measures will be in place where necessary.

Motorists should drive to the conditions and allow extra time for travelling through roadworks.

Eligible reconstruction works are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
